Clean follows the story of Lexi Volkov, a celebrity from London who’s just been checked into rehab after being found blue from an overdose. Having to come to terms with her drug habits, as well as dealing with the ghosts in her past, she’s forced to come to terms with negative impact of her multi-billion pound lifestyle. There’s a lot of resistance, denial and a whole lot of swearing but, oh my god, this book is beautiful.
I basically read this book in one sitting. I was hooked from the first word and I just couldn’t put it down once I started. I loved following Lexi’s story, watching her grow and come to terms with her past through the book. But, Lexi’s story wasn’t the only story found in this book – there is also the stories of her fellow ‘inmates’ at the rehab facility – and the relationships that are formed filled me with hope. The way they pull round for one another is completely heart warming and, in the end, they help Lexi to realise how negative the rest of her relationships in her life are – how much of a drug they are for her.
This book was brilliantly written and I loved the (to me) unique story line of reading about someone with a drug over dose. Clean deals with drug addiction in a no bullshit kind of way, as well as mental health, relationships and everything in between. The way Juno writes is truly magical and I’ve sure it won’t be the last book of hers that I read!
